“He Went to Yale. I Went to Donbas.” JD Vance’s cousin on oil, Trump & Ukraine | Ukraine This Week

In this episode of Ukraine This Week, host Don Arleth is joined in the studio by Nate Vance. A former U.S. Marine, Vance fought for Ukraine and is the cousin of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

With winter approaching and Russia intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Vance discusses the growing threat of Russian kamikaze drone attacks and Ukraine’s limited air defense resources.

He questions whether Ukraine can adequately protect Kyiv and its critical infrastructure before winter arrives. He warns that NATO risks failing to learn from Ukraine’s combat experience, particularly in countering drones and other asymmetric threats.

He stresses that military personnel must be present on the ground to understand how Ukrainian tactics work in practice. Vance says that discussions with his cousin have influenced how the vice president speaks about the war.

However, he emphasizes that President Donald Trump remains the ultimate decision-maker on U.S. policy toward Ukraine.
