Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries have evolved from isolated attacks into a sustained campaign, becoming more frequent, more precise, and increasingly damaging.
In this episode of Ukraine This Week, we are joined by chemical engineer William Theil, who spent 14 years working at major Russian refineries. He estimates that Russian refinery capacity is now at roughly 50% of its boilerplate capacity at the beginning of the war, while at least half of the 38 major refineries he tracks require some level of repair. We also discuss how the cumulative effects of repeated strikes are shortening the time it takes for serious disruptions to emerge, and examine Russia’s efforts to bring damaged refineries back online, including rapid repairs and temporary fixes.
To find out what sustained damage could mean for Russia’s refining capacity and wider oil industry, watch this episode of Ukraine This Week.
