Electric cars took decades to go mainstream — electric planes might take even longer. We flew in BETA Technologies' Alia CX300, one of the most promising electr…

.15 cents/kw come on, were paying about .50 cents here in cali.
Its not $1 a flight 😂
What is the major push for electric?? It's worse for the environment. It performs less. It's less efficient. <br>Gas is and will be plentiful for at least 600 years at current rates of usage growth. It is vastly more reliable. It is cleaner for the environment.
I think low altitude aviation is totally in China's domain. From rare earths,l to cutting edge batteries to compact efficient actuators , chinese companies are currently the market leaders. And they have an edge on the regulation side too compared to most democracies like US. The only thing left is funding and branding both of which china is catching up fast!😅
“it’ll cost us maybe a dollar to do this flight” yeah I don’t think so. I pay $5 to half charge a Tesla with a 78kWh battery 🔋 in Iceland, with very cheap electricity ⚡️
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=330">5:30</a> WRONG Heart Aerospace YC W19 has already done it's successful flight test. 100ft Wing Span and 25,000lbs take off weight. A vastly bigger 2x DOZEN passenger aircraft.
what about using batteries for takeoff and jet engines are very efficient at cruising so hybrid system like these can work
One thing to consider is a plane burns fuel and lands with a lesser weight than takeoff. Which is great. With battery powered same weight on takeoff and landing.
Velis electro been certified for 6 years. Idk what that beta guy was whining about
Drop out battery to escape fire?
I irony is that an idiot, like Trump, help perpetuate the electric flight industry 🇺🇸
Wait, so the plane can literally shut the engine off and glide, but the battery is still the thing keeping bigger aircraft basically impossible?
They don't "maximize the airplane" for efficiency; it's called optimizing. And nobody with half a brain believes Beta is the only company to optimize for aerodynamic efficiency.
BETA is really growing fast, I have been following them for a while now! They literally make their engineers fly the planes they design. Can't wait to see where they will be in 1-2 years from now. GO BETA!!
YC can create good companies, this is an example (heart aerospace's plane is way bigger)
These guys are like an Aptera for micro haul flights.
Sorry gas has still proven to out last.
So understand these E-planes can only fly short domestic flights, but is the FAA ready to allow them to fly? I feel such stringent regulations are being imposed due to some vested interests!
You're Essentially Purchasing Chinese Made Components Assembling Them and Sending It Over to Kill Russians. It Must Feel Like Y'All Have It Worked Out. Laughing To The Bank As They Say
I am surprised that more companies don't utilize silicone carbon batteries
Why is he wearing a kippah
Wow, you missed the T-zero. The first Lithium ion battery car from AC Propulsion. History lost
just make high speed rail, way better than all this bs
which is why US needs to be serious in battery or else their competitors who's into battery already may crash the jet market. nuke is key
Batteries do not scale. As you mentioned the energy density is very small compared to jet fuel or diesel. This design would be competitive against a Cessna plane or a helicopter not a 200-300 person plane.
so the electricity running the plane obviously won't cost much, but how much cost would be added if you take into account the lifespan of the battery that's taken away per flight?
Bs, stop the grifting electric planes are ok just like gas powered personal use flying bike "Sky-Doos". Your stagnation is death.
"an electric engine" is not a thing lol..<br>Its called a motor.
general question could we make a batteries way less?
Hydrogen is the answer.<br><br>Batteries are to hydrogen what Laser disks were to dvd's.
I wonder how the Wright brothers would have fared in our modern society with everyone telling them "You CAN'T do THAT!"<br>It will be enjoyable watching the doubters eat their words.<br>I love how this (modern) video talks about current and ancient past battery technology.<br>it's so OBVIOUSLY stilted.<br>Instead of telling us about the batteries available now, how about talking about the batteries that will be available in say, 2030?<br>There's an entire car company in China built around swap capable batteries.<br>There are big trucks doing long haul in Australia that swap batteries.<br>Again, the propaganda in this video is SO obvious to anyone with some actual knowledge of the topic.<br>Vertical integration is used extensively in China, and by Tesla.<br>I suggest people get used to VTOL craft as they are likely to become more common in years to come.<br>The most likely market for these planes you showcased will be over seas, long before certification in the USA.<br>",,, are going to die, it's just a matter of time."<br>Maybe in the USA, but in other countries they will thrive.<br>I remember when they said electric flight would never happen.<br>Now we have small planes.<br>Sooner or later, bigger planes WILL happen.<br>Please document that when it happens, okay?
Why are you wearing a tiny hat?
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=288">4:48</a> MBE1 is Megatron
Today Sept 18 2026, jet fuel cost $8.12 per gallon
One thing people missing is, WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE'S A THERMO RUN OFF aka battery caught fire!? Of course there are many cases of jet planes crash due to fire, but remember, once lithium battery's on fire then it can't be put out, so rather than all the weight and cost, it's the danger I'm worry about!
Forgot EVE wich is kicking ass
The batteries run out
Our flight school has two Velis all electric and they are a joke for regular use.
I'm going to have to call B's on the claims it can fly 300 miles. Faa regs are 30 mins vfr and 45 minutes ifr reserve Incase of emergencies. This plane has a max 1 hour and 45 minutes flight time do to battery endurance. Because you must legally protect that 30-to-45-minute FAA reserve, the actual usable flight time for a pilot planning a mission in the ALIA CX300 is closer to 60 to 75 minutes of point-to-point travel time. This translates to the real-world operations of 125 to 150 miles
Many many years ago they said it was impossible for cars to replace horse pulled wagons.
Just a reminder to all the naysayers that the first flight of Heart Aerospace X1 happened last month. That's a THIRTY SEAT airplane that flew for 27 minutes and cost $5 in electricity. And that's when solid state batteries are expected to be put into production EV vehicles this year. The technology is already far more advanced than people want to admit.
What if you make a battery fly ? Like a battery design like a plane and it fly
Great seeing you guys get opportunities to share the camper love with industy partners. Weight, truck required, costs?
"A dollar". Wow, a magic plane that doesn't have to pay for pilots, maintenance, airport fees ect. EV owners soon learned that they can't run their cars for "a dollar".<br><br>Electric planes may technically work but the reason that so many startups go out of business is because it soon becomes apparent that their products won't be able to generate any profits.
Spoilers for the stupid, clickbait title: Electric planes are absolutely not only NOT impossible, but FAR more reliable and economically viable, especially for shorter, regional flights.
I mean you also took the most inefficient EV as an example. And cars do take their "batteries" around, not sure what that "expert" meant
The 0.2% number is deceptive since you are really opening new markets. Also, you can expect a jump in battery tech when Li-air batteries are better developed. Then there are hybrid planes that reduce fuel costs with batteries rather than trying to do the whole flight with batteries. The infrastructure will slowly develope just like with aviation fuel. It is in fact a much cheaper infrastructure required. Charging speeds are at the point that you really don't have to swap out batteries.
Hat detected.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=677">11:17</a> Regular commercial planes take off at around 200mph, this def ain’t that fast lol
Since the old batteries still have capacity left but not suitable for flight, they can use it for energy storage for renewable energy
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=839">13:59</a>: "Our problem is we can't cause a fire. Well, show us how to start the fire and we'll show you that it's contained, but we can't start the fire."<br><br>I guess these guys haven't been working with high energy density batteries for very long...
Not talking about Joby at all is a shame. They're years ahead of any other company with their eVTOL.
why not a hybrid. with15 KW generator from an Air Power Unit (APU) coupled to less batteries, props turned by electricity ?
That's all well and good... missed opportunity to switch over to a couple videos of teslas burning themselves to the ground...
A lot of assumptions made in this presentation based on an American POV which is in the current US political climate extremely corrupt.<br>If the same sort of reasoning was applied to EVs or some other new technology then nothing would change. The reality is that people change and adapt, as do business models.<br>This isn't to say that electric aircraft will get bigger, the reality is that big aircraft are a problem and electric aircraft can probably fulfil most future requirements. The pundits that say electric aircraft must cover the full range of existing aircraft types, sizes etc have their heads in the sand and ignore history and cultural changes.
I was able to sit in and do a short test drive of a EV1 when I was in high school researching an environmental science project. It's criminal that GM crushed 99.9% of the EV1 they produced.
You lost not a real motorist just going to give up enegry to the elites to controll us they dont want us to have personal powerplants anymore you cant see through it. They will controll the power source and only let you store energy not create it. You slave.😮
If the electric plane can't glide without power, it's a no go. Drone style aircraft is a crash waiting to happen.
A lower horse power gas car can do 0 to 60 in 3 seconds
Its not cool fruit bowl
We will use electricity because its cheaper than fuel! But the battery needs replaced every year...
Funny how all science technology reporting forgets to add the qualifier, "now", as in, "electric air flight is impossible NOW". Our current understanding of science and technology has been evolving at a breakneck pace for nearly a century. What's impossible today may be possible, if not commonplace a decade or two from now. Sixty years ago, everyone was talking on telephones the size of a toaster attached to a cord that was attached to a box within a wall that was part of a house, building or part of public phone booths that were literally on every street corner in every city across America. Most family homes had one phone with a single phone line that everyone in the house shared. Today, everyone carries a phone in their pocket or purse that lets us call someone across the street or across the country without paying exorbitant long-distance fees equivalent to a dollar to much more for every minute just to call someone living 15 minutes away by car. Now, the entire country is accessible to everyone every minute of the day for a small monthly fee, including calls in real-time video. Now, our phones are far more powerful than the computers used to get man to the moon and have bright color screens that surpassed what passed communication deviced dreamed up by science fiction visionaries of the 1960's! <br><br>Battery technology is currently evolving and improving at a ludicrous rate thanks to tremendous and regularly occurring breakthroughs that reliably occur literally every few months. Air travel will evolve with battery innovation driven mainly by the electric car industry. Batteries are getting progressively lighter and with higher power densities and it's only a matter of a decade before domestic, short-range, commercial air travel will be mostly electric. There are electric motors in development that already achieve speeds over 15,000 rpm without suffering heat-related performance penalties.<br><br>Technological development will not slow down, in fact the opposite is true, barring planet ending asteroid impacts.
I went to school, at MIT, with no less than seven people who can prove this whole video wrong in every single frame of it. <br><br>We just intentionally choose not to have solar powered anything. It is a very intentional decision that all of these companies, all of these governments, all of these public officials, are all making. <br><br>I've literally seen people making personal airplanes, this same size almost, with solar panels, and batteries and the whole 9 yd. <br><br>Choosing not to have that is not the same thing as being incapable. Or even impractical.
Another interesting video, these on tech, transportation and automotive industry are just the best, keep it up Insider team 🤟💪💪💪⚡<br>But otherwise here in Slovenia we have quite successful maker of electric lightweight prop planes Pipistrel - their model Velis Electro is used around the world form military to flights schoos. The electric flight for short flights, flying schools, panoramic turist flights is simply the best solution.
You guys gotta do one of these videos with horizon aircraft. if you think the Alia is cool then you’ll be blown away by the Cavorite X7!
Soup can with propellers
damn that simulation looks so good
its all about physics and the weight of batteries. The amount of energy stored in avgas or jet fuel is so much higher than that stored in batteries without the weight penalty and will always be the truth. There is a threshold for electric planes and once studied one will see that there will never, ever be an electric plane that would equal the performance of an airliner, its that simple!!!!
until we design robust light weight solar panels anyway.
Semi solid-state and hybrid hydrogen-electrics are the future techs that will crack this wide open. The combination of both together will help unlock a new generation of general aviation, private regional and perhaps even global flight one day. Heck even the A380 is/was going to be hybridized as a test platform. If they can make a case for improving the economics of yesterday's Super Jumbo of Tomorrow? I'm here for it!
Crazy that they made a video about electric vehicles and used some random Hummer model as the benchmark, barely even mentioned Tesla. Not to mention they compared an electric motor to a turboprop instead of turbofan, which is the vastly superior method of converting jet fuel to thrust. This whole video is just a paid advertisement for this startup.
It’s kinda a big advert for Beta. For example: when they talk about certification, they basically only talk about Beto once more, when Jobi is far ahead of all the other players in this regard yet they don’t mention one word about Jobi.
Also read "I flew on a startup's one-of-a-kind electric plane that could reshape air travel by 2027": <a href="https://bit.ly/4z1temV">https://bit.ly/4z1temV</a>
Certification by 2027, not going to happen. Also about the uncontained fires saying it won't happen because there is no fuel but forgetting about battery fires.
what is this hat
Batteries are heavy and can’t hold as much energy as jet fuel at the moment is the biggest reason. Once that’s solved sky is the limit 🥁
this would be the best thing since sliced bread in aviation, no more crazy maintenince, dirt cheap travel etc etc
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=393">6:33</a> saw the juices hat and unsubscribed instantly
I have a dumb question. Regular everyday batteries are pretty heavy. But energizer lithium ultimate batteries, which are very expensive, have almost no weight to them. Why can’t they use those batteries?
How about BYD "blade battery 2"
The electric planes were promised to him 3000 Years ago
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=919">15:19</a>
The thing that's missing from this is although electric turbines / motors are more efficient that regular jet fuel engines, the higher the altitude you go, more of the battery will be needed to generate cabin heat. Whereas in a jet / turbo prop, heat from the engine can be recycled to warm the cabin from VERY cold external environments.<br><br>Also, there's no way that 25kw flight is gonna cost a $1.
Without an idea of pricing of a ride there is nothing to compare. Wouldn't even tell us a target price of the plane. Looking forward to details and the type of pilot license needed to operate it.
If I were on that plane I would have have LOVED for him to tell me the motor was off AFTER we land. Lmfao. Although I guess you would hear it. That is cool though it can just cruise
Summary: Batteries and their support systems weight way farther than fuels...
Now tell me how the UFOS fly
Well, I'm waiting for a breakthrough in carbon wings that are both a battery and a wing. Today, carbon's energy capacity is up to a quarter of lithium's.
Solid State batteries. You didn’t cover it mush less weight and more density
the stock price has collapsed by almost 50% since its IPO, the only firms currently giving a Buy rating are the original IPO underwriters, and large institutional holders are bailing - not sure this puff piece is going to turn things around
It will get certification when the rest have caught up Boeing, air bus😂😂
The video is pretty late. There's already a proto with decent range. So this video is useless
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=554">9:14</a> this cabin looks like a VR headset + a lot of code can replace all this screens. Except control panels, of course.
These are just glorified helicopters
First American I hear say "Kilogram"... What happened??
I'm curious how these smaller planes hold up in dodgy weather.
Love the innovation, keep going, one day it’ll all come together
It will take time, but it will happen. The world is changing.
It seems like a cheap solution for an air taxi, say, needing to from Cincinnati to Cleveland for a meeting, and then return the same day.
One HUGE problem I see is an in flight lithium ion fire. Your literally almost doomed if they catch on fire. Edit <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFILxL1jMg&t=835">13:55</a>, I'm sorry but you think the propeller is the only thing that can start a fire??? Faulty wiring, accidental penetration of the battery, Hazardous cargo just to name a few. I don't trust this company if it can't show basic risk management.
