During WW2, the German chose not to destroy the beautiful and most significant monument of their enemy, while their own treasures are being targeted and destroyed systematically.

I don’t agree people destroy their enemies most significant monument and places with rich history. And history is repeating itself now with some countries intentionally destroying their enemies history, to wipe the history away.

This episode brought me back. In 2005 I took a trip to Germany (Cologne) after graduating college, but I spent a day in Frankfurt instead of just moving on. I really enjoyed it; I stayed in a hostel near the train station and met some awesome people. We took a walking tour of the city and enjoyed some type of local festival near the river. I recognize a lot of the skyline/sites. :) And we tried the Apfelwein!

I was in Frankfurt and Nuremberg in the year 2024. Neither city will ever see me again. It is incredibly overcrowded in Frankfurt. Too many people and very dirty and unfriendly. Nuremberg is and will probably always be a Nazi city and a Nazi stronghold. There it seems to materialize, once a Nazi always a Nazi. Sorry. But neither city works for me anymore. Moreover, in Nuremberg, there are still old towers from the Middle Ages, where witches or women were burned alive. Nuremberg is, for me, a city of death. And I am German, West German but I come from North Rhein Westphalia.

And in Frankfurt I had heard the Sachsenhausen area is not to be missed with its architecture, restaurants and nightlife. If I go I hope to see as much as possible. And Steve, did you visit the Museum district in Frankfurt - would love to see that as well.

When we look and see how easily Fascism is spreading in this country we can well understand how it happened in Germany. All you need is a pliable, gullible citizenry who are eager to see things happen quickly and you have a fertile ground for the spread of Fascism.

I love Frankfurt. It is an easy town in which to move about and it has some fabulous museums along the opposite side of the Main River. From Frankfurt one is so close to so many other wonderful cites. Rick mentions Nuremberg and it is also very close to Cologne, Trier, the Mosel valley, the Middle Rhine, Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Munich. It is a great location in its own right, but it is also a wonderful location to start an exploration of some of the best of Europe.

I love my boy Rick Steves, his videos are awesome, his books are awesome. I have to bring up one thing that he mentions that bothers me in this and some other videos. Round towers were not meant to defend against artillery. They were round so there would be no blind spot or hard edge to use when an enemy was undermining a castle. The huge English Castles built in Wales in the 1280s-1290s all had round towers because of this, and they were built well before artillery came into widespread use in Britain.

I would walk to the marketplatz every morning in Hanau then take a bus to the bahnhof then a train to Frankfurt Ost then the subway then a bus and then walk to 97th every morning in about 25 minutes. Amazing.

Frankfurt, i have been there several times and have to say between drug addicts, homeless people, pimps and prostitutes, the odd arabic fast food dealer whitch most likely deal more then that too from what i saw, it is a hellhole to be with the permanent aroma of urine and excrements. No one will get me back there again and i do not get what is to like about it, everything possibly wrong with a city is wrong there and my last memory was seeing a druggy shooting up while my train left the railwaystation ( funny fact the macdonalds in the station has no toilet or rest room so imagine about the hygienic standarts of the whole thing but be assured it looks better then the burger king...)

Well made and informative video!
I lived 5 years in Nuremberg (Nürnberg). The city has much more to offer, rather than WWII stuff. One should not leave that area without visiting the old and still active beer cellars, eating Schäufele (and go into food coma for the next two days 😉), visiting Frankonian Switzerland, having some fun in many Biergartens, beautiful Herzogenaurach (home to Adidas and Puma with their interesting story), just to mention a few.
I recorded a lot of videos there but unfortunately my hard disk broke and all my videos are now lost. I will for sure go there some day and make some videos.
