Employment rate seems like the wrong metric for countering the "lazy european" stigma--does it take into account days or hours worked per year? Sure, everyone could be fully employed, but if working hours for FTE are a fraction of their American counterparts, then it doesn't negate the claim.

I feel this kind of “moonshot investing” is the result of wealth concentration. Venture capital is the result of folks with “money to burn” and the expectation of 100:1 returns. The insidious part happens when you have generations of folks who live in a bubble (Silicon Valley) trying more and more ridiculous things, encouraged by the fact that that “it worked before”. The answer, of course, is reducing wealth concentration.

The removal of the Schuldenbremse aka "debtbrake" was done by a parliament that at that time had already been voted out. Yet it was passed through collusion of parts of the ruling coalition and the oppositon.
On paper and, at least I havent heard anything to the contrary from the courts, they had the legitimacy to do this, but if you were to go by what the souvereign wanted, they did not. According to polls at the time 55% of the voters wanted a reform of the debtbrake. That is far from the necessary 2/3 majority to change the articles of Germanys de facto constitution. Yet it was done anyways and by doing this, the coalition that had been voted out dicated fiscal terms to whatever cabinet and coalition that would be formed after. Alas, here we are.

The problem with Germany are the people! In general, the majority of people are scared of the Internet as they cannot see or feel it. Data security is far more important than anything else. As you mentioned, Germans can build software that is great in managing a hardware but is useless from a UX perspective. The very bad part is that it will never change. My brothers wife still uses a smartphone that is about 10 years old and a laptop that is older than that as a school teacher. She refuses to use any social media or anything in that regard. I remember, over 10 years ago, I built an App so that people who are somewhat in proximity can help each other if needed without being in a friends circle. However, I did not even get my friends to install it and help testing it as they were concerned about data security. While I think that the dual school and workplace training is the best in the world, it also "creates" these people that are very hard to change. Germans do not like change, period. Even if they see that there is an issue, they will much rather go down in a sinking ship than admitting the failure and switch gears to change how things are done. For most Germans, a 2-3 mBit Internet speed is enough, because we do not need more. They never understood that it is not about the speed, but if you put a limit on it, the whole country will limit itself and slow down. There are so many things in Germany that are strange, like the "Gesundheitskarte". An amazing piece of technology, to have all the information needed when going to a doctor or pharmacy on a chip of a credit card sized card with individual access levels. Germany has spent Billions of Euros into it, only that the people refuse to use it as it might not be a Gazillion times safe to make sure nobody else gets the data. Or, go to Google maps and check out Street view and you will see that there are many houses that are blurred out as Germans are scared of the security violation that might be happening, not understanding that anybody can walk by and take a picture of that exact same house. Even stranger, the fact that there are names on mailboxes and door bells, in a country where data security is the highest and most important.
The problem is much deeper than anybody might think and if Germany, the youth will not change, Germany will have a huge problem in the future and with older East Germans now getting more power, it will actually go backwards. It was great as long as it worked, but Germany has not understood that times have changed and that it's people have to change with it. Germans much rather blame everybody else but never admit that they are stuck in the past.
@rawkymonk

You gave employment statistics comparing USA and Germany, and used that to claim it's not the lazy Germans that is the problem. What this statistic doesn't take into account is the productivity of the worker and how much a worker costs. I can't believe that Germany is more productive when a typical German works less hours per week, has more PTO time, has more opportunities for sick leave, the labor unions and different work stoppages because of them etc. So I was completely unconvinced...

4:42 I have to disagree here. Wanting to spend money that you don't have without cutting the massive welfare state, leading to endless borrowing without ever being able to pay the debt is the exact problem that's been destroying the UK, USA and France. German monetary conservatism, if you can call it that, is what afforded the nation to spend on welfare until the demographics started to make that harder every year.

I think germany's more cautious approach would have been fine, if they had kept spending continuously. The problem really is, that they are trying to catch up on the investments they should have made yesterday, with a system that will deliver it the day after tomorrow.
@RaymondBlomont

The spending constipation in Germany does affect Germans' income and living standards. The foolish US billionaires who are chasing the wind, or the Moon, don't impede US growth or living standards. My life didn't change one bit when the .com bubble burst. Or, when the mortgage market tanked in 2008. I kept working, producing, saving and investing. Some did lose homes, etc., but 4 years later the US economy recovered. Mal-investment is real but it's probably not as bad to a large economy as not fixing roads due to what, in the end, "consensus."?
@TessaTickle

the entire video is a strawman.
