it is ridiculously expensive to have kids. One almost can't have kids and some hobbies at the same time. In Spain taxes are around 43% earning 40 per year I get 25 th and one kid cost me about 10. After paying credit, electric bills, gasoline, local taxes etc there is literally nothing left to save. and you do it for about 20 years.

From 11 mins onwards, the tone turns positive and honestly, the German government did the easy way out by importing immigrants and allowing refugees to come into Germany without background checking. It's kinda funny how this video is trying to be objective but from the start it gradually propose only a liberal solutions for this massive problems. It's even more funny when you notice that in the entire video there is literally nothing about taxing the rich more. The only solution according to authors is that the whole working class should resign at least a bit from the welfare state - not that the rich should finally start to pay their fair share to maintain or even possibly increase the welfare state. But as taxing the wealth is probably the only solution that is freely available and will also work shows me that in reality the politicians don't want to fight with this issue effectively. They want rather the bury the welfare system completely than tax their rich friends more (or sometimes themselves). And as only the neoliberal solutions are presented in this video I find it falsely objective and even shameful.

Focusing on population growth and ever increasing consumption as a necessity for economic health was never a sustainable strategy in my opinion. Back when I was a child, we already knew there were going to be too many of us in the near future but instead of planning for that time we chose to kick the can down the road in favor of continuing wealth generation. For a very long time now we have not been able to produce enough food for all the humans on this planet using only (mostly) natural methods. Starting thousands of years ago, and accelerating exponentially, we have used science and energy to make more and more food allowing us to encourage more and more population growth and energy consumption. It’s a cycle based on greed and I don’t understand why anyone thinks it is perpetually sustainable. It has been clear for a long time that there would be a reckoning and I think people are having less children because it’s obvious (on some level) that we can’t keep growing forever. There will be pain and compromise to reach a stable population, but that’s what we should be concerned with. How do we get to a world where we don’t rely on growth and consumption to power our economies. This channel should do a video on the Haber-Bosch process and how it allowed us to artificially increase food production and feed billions more of us than would otherwise be possible.
@mattrosencrance6048
The German welfare state is such an “accomplishment” that it will usher in Germans’ replacement by the third world, so that Germany won’t just fade out, but its children will suffer social dissolution and every class of crime as it becomes the third world.

Western civilization in Europe was great while it lasted.

A good video for sure but it also stinks of cowardly neoliberalism. You decided not to talk about the biggest cause of all these problems – the hoarding of wealth by the richest 1% and the growing devide between the ultra luxury and the poverty. For a young person it's really hard not to get into catastrophic thinking though. The governments and media outlets are led by rich boomers who will do everything before they tax themeselves or cause the apartments they hoard to loose value. Feels like no amount of activism will abolish capitalism and no revolution is coming either.

Germany's struggle isn't just a German problem. Seems to be a big problem across the entire globe. When the video talked about the Millennials' struggle, it was basically the same struggle in Japan and the US.
@angelacameron6329
Canadian here - sounds exactly like our issue. So many boomers ask me and my husband “when” are we going to have kids. We are happily married and both have an income. There is literally no way we can afford childcare so, that’s never going to happen. It’s so awful because we got married and always assumed we would have kids. We want kids but it would literally ruin our lives financially. Meanwhile our older family members are literally rolling in money and retired.
Feels like politicians say they want healthy communities but I really don’t see how that’s what they want, when the “DINK” lifestyle is forced upon basically all of millennials.

As a non-German, if it’s any consolation to the Germans - it’s not just you guys (as the video gets to at the end) - it’s pretty much a global problem as even developing countries’ birthrates are slowing down/going below replacement fertility levels (which the video did not get to). So though your country may be ‘over’… it’s more like the world is ‘over’.

The next generation is less because of economic exploitation. Given super-efficiency, pensioners are surely no problem. The asymmetry of valuation is the problem, a regime-made one. The regime creates money to buy work according own valuation and extends this exploitation to the whole society via companies, adding the owners' central valuation to the asymmetry. Suggestion: Shift from labor to company taxation: Take labor out of cost, thereby stopping central labor prizing altogether. The resulting company profit is taxed and the rest is shared among employees.

I completely agree. the problem doesn't stop there. In Korea, the population aged 50 and over has reached 42%, and they mostly vote for candidates who prioritize senior and retirement welfare policies. The real issue is that this demographic just keeps growing. As a result, policies for the younger generation are pushed to the back burner in every election, starting a vicious cycle that leads right back to a declining birth rate. People in their 20s and 30s now feel that voting won't change anything, and the political sphere simply does not reflect the voices of the youth. Consequently, the birth rate has plummeted to 0.8 and continues to get worse. It is not too late for Germany. To the younger generation there please actively participate in politics before you end up in the same situation as Korea.

For 230 years, since Robert Malthus in 1798, all predictions of future disasters based on changes in human population have turned out to be false. Assume the population figures are correct. This video ignores both productivity increase, and immigration, as did their Korea video. Perhaps because these videos are made in Germany and not the United States they did not think of immigration as a solution. The current population of the United States, 2020 Census is 10,000,000 Native American, and 321,000,000 descended from immigrants.

Right now A.I. is threatening to take over massive parts of our economy. If the problem is that we don't have enough young folks to support the old folks, couldn't AI + robotics be a big part of the solution? (Let's ignore, for this analysis, the likelihood that AI will also destroy our social fabric and take over our system.)

If AI & robotics can solve the worker-to-consumer gap, then the next problem emerges, humanity's forever problem: destructive wealth inequality. If we capped the wealth gap such that the wealthiest members of society could only bring in 10X the income of the least wealthy working people, and couldn't pass on wealth to their children (who would have to rely on the same system and opportunities that the rest of society had), we could then distribute the vast technological and material resources that we have in such a way that everyone would be taken care of; and the wealthy would have more limited ability to buy the system. Then population shrinking could be a good thing, as it would put less of a destructive strain on the planet's resources.

What do you think?
