In middle school I spent a summer in der Schweiz. The local dialect was nuts, but I picked up enough Hoch Deutsch that I was semi-fluent when I came back stateside. Then, in school, we spent almost no time speaking in meaningful situations with useful phrases, and almost all the time memorizing cases, i.e dative, genitive, und so weiter. The nitpickiness of having to attach the perfect dative ending to the adjectives based on whether or not it was a dative verb...really? It's like the language was invented by a cop. Then, reading, OMG. How counterintuitive to leave the verb to the very end of a very long sentence. The people I like. The logical sensibilities and liberal politics, I like. The grammar structure...gimme Spanish any day. Ni modo. And yet I'll bet my dismay is born more from bad pedagogy and text books than Nazi grammar. How can I get past all that perfectionism?

A crash course like this is the exact right shape for grammar and also the exact wrong place to start. I mean that as a compliment. Watching this cold on day one you drown. Watching it after six months of clumsy German with actual sentences banging around in your head, suddenly the four cases stop being a wall and start being a map of stuff you were already doing wrong.

Grammar makes sense in retrospect. Almost never in advance.

My loop for languages now is boring on purpose because of this. Input first, always. A German podcast on my walk to Warsaw center, one telenovela episode a night for Spanish, 15 min on Praktika with a tutor called Skye where I speak and get corrected in real time, and only then, when I keep hitting the same mistake in three different contexts, I open a grammar video like this and it actually lands. Learning it the other way around gave me nothing but headaches for years.

When did grammar start making sense to you, before you were speaking or after

I found German pronunciation annoying and ugly,how can you help
@moayadmahamead1652
1. Starting with "Wie geht es dir?" is an illogical foundation; you are teaching the Dative case and complex syntax to beginners who haven't even learned basic conjugation yet.
2. Promoting "chunking" is harmful because it forces students to memorize rigid phrases instead of understanding the grammatical mechanics needed to build their own sentences.
3. Your circular teaching style jumping from pronouns to cases and back again, destroys any chance of a student forming a cohesive mental model of the language.
4. Using undefined abbreviations and symbols instead of full, formal terms obscures the underlying structure of the language.
You are using the same teaching method that every other teacher uses. Guess what. it never works. just because students can parrot a sentence doesn’t mean that they understood the language.
best regards

Honestly, what you are doing in this video only works for people who already understand German grammar. You are going way too fast over material particularly cases that people struggle with for years. Dative and Genitiv are unlike English and most people struggle with it for a long time. Anyway, there’s just way too much material for a total beginner to deal with in this video and you may be turning people off of German more than you realize.

My mother was German, I speak a reasonable German, my wife and I, grown kids on their own for some time, have been to Germany a total of five long and extended visits in the last 16 years. Little Germany could be great again if only you would remove your Muslims and Africans that you have allowed to infest Germany. What we saw in Berlin was horrible.
