In German there are two different ways to translate the word “you”: Formal = Sie, Casual = Du.<br><br>In face-to-face interactions, the formal &quot;Sie&quot; is the standard way of addressing someone. However, when the person you are speaking to is the same age as you (or younger) and you are pretty young yourself - you could venture to use &quot;du&quot; right away, especially when the setting is relaxed (at a party, in a bar, etc).<br><br>In this video, both people are fairly young, and around the same age, so the conversation starts with “du” phrases, although depending on the situation (official/business), it would sometimes start with &quot;Sie” phrases, like: <br><br>Wie heißen sie? (What’s your name?)<br>Sprechen sie Deutsch? (Do you speak German?)<br><br>You shouldn’t switch from sie to du without saying anything. Switching to the informal &quot;du&quot; at a official/business setting usually requires that you know and like each other well, at some point one will offer the &quot;du&quot; - traditionally, the older one to the younger one. <br><br>If you would address someone in English by saying Sir ___, Mr. X or Mrs. Y, you should use Sie in German.<br><br>Children are addressed with &quot;du&quot; by default. <br><br>On the internet/social media, the informal &quot;du&quot; is the default form and being addressed with &quot;Sie&quot; is unusual.
