I lived through those times. For me. the most important factor for Singapore's success was they declared zero tolerance on corrutption from day 1. China learned from that. Malaysia, just a bridge away, blessed with abundance of natural resources is the other group in this paired t-test.

Dictator 😂😂😂
@PolitikaPolitika-ws9mk
I watched his interview just a while ago and I'm so fascinated that very often people who raised countries from ashes are referred as dictators but the ones who are leading their countries to ruin on directives of foreign influence are referred as democratic leaders... sad story of the "modern" society.

Singapore will not produce another Lee Kuan Yew. Our circumstances and environment have changed. A prime Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore today will be powerful, but probably not have the same impact as the 60s. And I'm sure in his afterlife, he'll rather a Singapore today that doesn't need him like we did back then.

Gone back never forgotten.

Developing countries need leaders that the West would cry about and call "dictator" or "authoritarian". That's the hard truth. As Deng Xiaoping said, "development is the hard truth." Let the libbed up, West worshiping Asians cry that you're being too heavy-handed. What they don't know is that all modern "democracies" during their periods of rapid development and industrialization were all authoritarian.

He never said that only smart women should reproduce and uneducated women should sterilise themselves..

In the 80s I believe there were university educated women who were having trouble finding husbands because men preferred to marry women less educated than them, so he said that intelligence is mainly based on genetics and encouraged men to marry educated women. There was a fair bit of backlash.. but as always, he was correct.

Singapore under Lee KY wasn't a dictatorship. What Singapore had was a top down system but it was a meritocracy (and it still is).
“We have a practical people whose culture tells them that contention for the sake of contention leads to disaster. I have said this on many a previous occasion; that had the mix in Singapore been different, had it been 75 per cent Indians, 15 per cent Malays and the rest Chinese, it would not have worked. Because they believe in the politics of contention, of opposition. But because the culture was such that the populace sought a practical way out of their difficulties, therefore it has worked.” LKY, 1985 parliament speech.
Such a system only works in a society in which the majority of its people is Chinese or being heavily influenced by Confucian belief.
@Drakeo-l8s

Lee Kuan Yew proved himself to be reliable, and he is not afraid to show his people that yes, he is authoritarian and rules with an iron fist. Basically saying "Yes, I am like this, do you want me or not?"...and hordes of people threw their lots behind him. And they succeeded! Its like your father telling you "Yes, I will scold and even cane you. Do you accept me as your father?" And the children all ran forward. And they thrived!!! Because they saw the LOVE in his eyes.
