More Seats, Better Representation? Big Bill to Reshape India’s Lok Sabha

Decode With Sudhir Chaudhary: A crucial bill to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies has been introduced in Parliament. It will require a two-thirds majority in both Houses and approval from more than half of the states before becoming law. The move aims to improve representation, reducing the current ratio of one MP per 2.2 million people to about 1.4 million. Since seat allocation is still based on the 1971 population, a revision is seen as necessary. With the new Parliament building capable of accommodating up to 850 MPs, the expansion is now technically feasible.

Decode With Sudhir Chaudhary: लोकसभा और विधानसभा सीटें बढ़ाने वाला अहम बिल संसद में पेश हो चुका है और अब इसे राज्यसभा व राज्यों की मंजूरी के बाद कानून बनाया जाएगा। इस बिल के पास होने के लिए दोनों सदनों में दो-तिहाई बहुमत और आधे से ज्यादा राज्यों की सहमति जरूरी होगी। सीटें बढ़ने से प्रतिनिधित्व बेहतर होगा—जहां अभी एक सांसद पर करीब 22 लाख लोग हैं, वहीं यह संख्या घटकर लगभग 14 लाख हो सकती है। 1971 की जनसंख्या के आधार पर तय सीटों को बदलना अब जरूरी माना जा रहा है। नए संसद भवन में 850 सांसदों की क्षमता के साथ यह बदलाव तकनीकी रूप से भी संभव है।
