Health Ombud releases findings on deaths involving healthcare professionals in KZN

The Health Ombud has cleared public hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal of any direct link to a series of deaths involving healthcare professionals that sparked national concern and intense public scrutiny over the past year.

Following an independent investigation commissioned after complaints by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and former Parliamentary Health Portfolio Committee chairperson Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, Ombud Professor Taole Mokoena says investigators found no evidence that workplace conditions, hospital management practices or broader systemic failures were responsible for the deaths.

While the investigation found no causal link between the deaths and workplace conditions, Mokoena says the loss of skilled personnel has nevertheless had a significant impact on healthcare services.
