Sacking of Ukrainian PM paints a sorry picture of situation in Kyiv | News in Depth

In a surprise development over the weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a change at the head of the government, removing Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko less than a year after appointing her to the office, a decision met with surprise and even concern by many, “which is quite short even by Ukrainian standards,” Peter Dickinson said.

“It’s not good optics. It doesn't look particularly good. (...) I mean, you want to demonstrate stability,” UkraineAlert Editor at the Atlantic Council, told TVP World. “And if you’re chopping and changing senior members of government at such a pace, then it implies instability, implies a lack of cohesion, a lack of strong leadership.”

The optics are particularly bad, considering that throughout her short tenure, Svyrydenko has shown herself to be a competent head of cabinet with no major scandals linked to her. Yet, her time in office ended just days shy of a full year.

“It looks harsh, and it doesn’t send out a very happy picture of what's going on behind the scenes in Ukrainian politics,” he added.
