The debate around land, housing and evictions has once again taken centre stage. Abahlali baseMjondolo marched in Durban, Johannesburg and Mpumalanga this week in protest against the proposed Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Amendment Bill.
Government says the Bill is intended to combat organised land invasions, strengthen enforcement mechanisms and address the activities of land invasion syndicates. The proposed amendments include penalties for inciting unlawful land occupations and changes to the eviction process.
Critics, however, argue the Bill could undermine constitutional protections for vulnerable communities and criminalise those advocating for land rights. Public comment on the Bill closes on 16 June.
To discuss this further, we're joined by Thapelo Mohapi, General Secretary of Abahlali baseMjondolo.
