Nepal-Tibet floods: Thawing permafrost could pose growing danger in Himalayas, says Geoscientist

Rescue operations continue on Aug 28 after a massive flood swept through a river valley in Nepal and the Tibet region of China, with experts warning of the risk of further floods from clogged rivers. The US Geological Survey said the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse that triggered a vast flow of icy debris. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, University of Dayton geosciences professor Umesh Haritashya says scientists need to look beyond melting glaciers to the growing risks posed by thawing permafrost as the climate warms.
