Ep54 Why Did Korea’s First Priest, Kim Dae-geon, Go to the Philippines in 1839? (Part 2)

A total of 19 letters written by Saint Kim Dae-geon have survived and been handed down to the present day. Earlier, in 1839, the two seminarians, Kim Dae-geon and Choe Yang-eop, also spent time in Manila and Lolomboy, nurturing their dream of becoming priests. Before receiving priestly ordination, the seminarian Kim Dae-geon, who eagerly awaited his return to Joseon aboard the French warship Érigone, passed through Manila and later witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing firsthand. After Father Kim Dae-geon was martyred in 1846 and canonized as a saint in 1984, Lolomboy in the Philippines, where he had stayed, was developed into a pilgrimage site. We trace the footsteps of Father Kim Dae-geon, who continues to serve as a special link between the peoples of Korea and the Philippines.


Ep54 한국 최초의 신부 김대건은 1839년 왜 필리핀에 갔을까? (파트 2)

성(聖) 김대건 안드레아 신부가 남긴 서한은 모두 19통이 전해진다. 이 가운데 가장 오래된 첫 번째 서한은 1842년 2월 28일 마닐라에서 작성된 것이다. 그에 앞서 1839년에는 김대건과 최양업 두 신학생이 마닐라와 롤롬보이에 머물며 사제의 꿈을 키우기도 했다.
사제 서품을 받기 전, 프랑스 군함 에리곤호를 타고 조선으로 돌아가기를 손꼽아 기다리던 신학생 김대건은 다시 마닐라를 거쳤고, 이후에는 난징조약 체결 현장을 직접 목격하기도 했다.
1846년 순교한 김대건 신부는 1984년 교황 요한 바오로 2세에 의해 성인으로 추대됐다. 이후 그가 머물렀던 필리핀 롤롬보이는 성지로 조성되며, 한국과 필리핀 양국 신자들에게 특별한 의미를 지닌 장소가 됐다.
한국과 필리핀을 잇는 특별한 연결고리가 된 김대건 신부의 발자취를 따라가 본다.
