Local transmission of H5 bird flu confirmed in Australia | ABC NEWS

Federal authorities say local transmission of the H5 strain of bird flu has occurred between a number of greater crested terns in South Australia.

The announcement is the first time it's been confirmed the virus was transmitted within Australia.

It comes after 11 more suspected cases were detected in South Australia.

There have still not been any cases detected in poultry or agricultural industries and officials say the risk to human health remains low.

Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says further spread of the virus should be expected.

There have been 27 confirmed detections of H5 bird flu to date — 10 in Western Australia, 14 in South Australia, two in New South Wales and one in Queensland.
