5,700 deaths in France after series of heat waves

France recorded more than 5,700 excess deaths, meaning those above what is expected under normal conditions, during recent heat waves that started in June. More than two-thirds of those who died were 75 or older. The number includes all deaths regardless of their cause, but represents a thirty-six per cent increase to the excess mortality rate during the period of record-breaking heat.
