Mount Dukono eruption: Guide who arranged expedition says he 'felt a sense of responsibility'

The remains of two Singaporean hikers who died during an eruption of Mount Dukono in Indonesia are undergoing forensic examination. Authorities are working with their families for formal identification and possible repatriation. The three victims, including one Indonesian national, were among a group of 20 climbers affected when Mount Dukono erupted in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, during their climb.

A three-day search and rescue operation involving over 200 personnel was concluded after all remains were recovered. Mountain guide Reza Salang, who organized the expedition, is under police investigation along with at least six other survivors. Those found responsible could face up to five years in prison. Local authorities have pledged outreach and mitigation efforts to improve community safety awareness, and officials are supporting victims' families regarding last rites and repatriation.
