Ukraine, Georgia, and Belarus emerged from the collapsing Soviet Union at roughly the same moment, but 35 years later they find themselves on radically different paths. Ukraine marks Independence Day while fighting Russia and advancing through the EU accession process.

Georgia celebrates the anniversary of its constitution amid worsening relations with Europe and a government increasingly reluctant to confront Moscow. Belarus, meanwhile, marks an independence anniversary largely outside the state calendar as Alexander Lukashenko’s regime becomes increasingly dependent on Russia for its political, economic, and military survival.
