U.S. President Donald Trump presented surprising levels of amicability toward his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during their joint press conference following talks at the NATO summit in Ankara, with the highlight being the suggestions that Ukraine may receive the license to manufacture the Patriot interceptor missiles its air defenses need so desperately. What, other than Ukraine’s recent successes in striking targets within Moscow, indicating that the war is far from ending in an easy victory for Russia, may have motivated Trump?

“I think that Trump has been unsuccessful with the deal with Iran, and I think he made it very clear that he was not happy with the outcomes,” said Iryna Krasnoshtan, Program Director at the International Center for Ukrainian Victory. “And I think that because of that, he may also want to shift the focus to Ukraine and Russia, hoping that there could be a potential outcome at some visible point in time.”
