Informal voting for new UN chief begins tomorrow

The race to become the next U.N. Secretary-General enters a critical new phase tomorrow when the Security Council holds its first informal poll to test support for the candidates.

Incumbent, Antonio Guterres' second and final five-year term ends on 31 December.

The Council poll, to be held behind closed doors, will be the first real indication of which of the current 7 candidates stand the best chance, and which may struggle to secure the backing needed to lead the world's largest multilateral organisation.
