GEMS | Public workers face 9.5% medical aid hike

The Government Employees Medical Scheme says the Council for Medical Schemes did not approve its proposal to reduce the scheme's 2026 contribution adjustment from 9.5% to 7.5%, leaving the higher contribution adjustment in place. This comes after unions such as the Public Servants Association protested and demanded the immediate reversal of the 9.5% medical aid contribution hike, which they say is "devouring" the wages of civil servants already struggling under a punishing cost-of-living crisis.
