The 2026 Local Government Elections are beginning to take shape, with political parties announcing their mayoral candidates and positioning themselves for what is expected to be a closely contested election.

BOSA has already named Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster as its Johannesburg mayoral candidate, while the EFF has announced Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng for the city. The ANC, however, has delayed the announcement of its mayoral candidates until September.

The ANC faces a particularly difficult contest in major metros, where service delivery failures, financial problems and coalition instability have become central issues for voters.
