Ukraine names new defense minister despite protests | Ukraine Brief

Ukrainian lawmakers on Wednesday voted to appoint President Zelenskyy’s nominee for defense minister. Yevhenii Khmara, who had been serving as acting defense minister since mid-July, will now head the ministry permanently.

The appointments have ended any hopes that Ukraine’s ex-defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, would return after the reshuffle. Late Tuesday evening, Fedorov called for nationwide elections.

Meanwhile, two senior Ukrainian politicians have been linked to a major anti-corruption investigation targeting an alleged network of current and former officials. Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities say the group laundered around $3.35 million used to pay bail in a separate energy corruption case.
