Ukraine’s National Pantheon adds fuel to history row with Warsaw | News in Depth

Ukraine’s parliament has approved legislation creating a National Pantheon to honor those who contributed to the country’s statehood and struggle for independence, but the proposal has deepened its diplomatic row with Poland over the likely inclusion of figures seen as responsible for the massacre of some 100,000 Polish civilians during World War II. Will the split between Warsaw and Kyiv result in Ukraine losing Polish support on the international stage?

“On international relations and mutual relations between Ukraine and Poland, there may be some dispute, but in general, Poland stands behind Ukraine with military support, logistic support, and so on,” said TVP World’s Editor-in-Chief Michał Broniatowski.

“The problem is the Ukrainian minority in Poland, more than a million people, most of them are exiles, refugees, people who are fleeing the war, mostly women and their kids,"" Broniatowski added. “And the emotions of Poles are turning against Ukrainians (...) and this is dangerous, because in this war of symbols, what is suffering is empathy first of all.”
