ASEAN weighs control of vital Strait of Malacca amid global trade tensions

Disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns in another critical maritime corridor. The Strait of Malacca will be top of the agenda at this week's ASEAN summit.
Last month, Indonesia’s foreign minister suggested the possibility of imposing levies on vessels transiting through.
While the proposal has been withdrawn, it has highlighted underlying tensions over control of this vital global trade route.
