Cape Town's mayoral race is starting to take clearer political shape, and it comes at a moment when local leadership is increasingly tied to national strategy.

The Democratic Alliance's position in the city remains central to its national identity, with Geordin Hill-Lewis, who has been mayor since 2021, now also elevated to DA federal leader in 2026, reinforcing Cape Town as both a governance showcase and a political stronghold for the party.

At the same time, ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, is continuing to expand its footprint beyond Gauteng and positioning itself as a challenger in major metros, including Cape Town, as part of its broader push to contest the DA in urban councils and grow its national relevance ahead of the next election cycle.
