Hegseth calls for more military spending in Asia, but will that bring security?

Speaking at this year's Shangri-La Dialogue, US Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth highlighted American military strength and called on US partners across the Asia-Pacific to increase defense spending. On China, however, Hegseth adopted a noticeably softer tone than the more alarmist rhetoric heard last year. But does this more moderate tone signal a real change in Washington's security approach? Is increased military spending the best path toward building regional security? And how does it differ from China's approach to regional prosperity and lasting peace?
