The 1943 massacres in Volhynia remain one of the deepest wounds in Polish-Ukrainian history. Zelenskyy’s symbolic tribute to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) organization, responsible for the killings of Polish civilians, started another phase of the battle over historical memory, raising outrage in Poland.

History is a pack of tricks we play on the dead, once wrote the great cynic Voltaire. Bones of some 100,000 Poles murdered by UPA, which lie buried in the fields and ditches across Western Ukraine, are the punchline.
