Severe turbulence that hit SQ321 in 2024 not detected by weather radar: Investigators

A weather radar system that might not have captured the severity of a turbulence has been cited as a key factor in the SQ321 flight that saw a fatality two years ago. A Transport Safety Investigation Bureau report also found that no fault messages were triggered, with similar issues recorded prior to the flight. SQ321 had departed London for Singapore on 20 May 2024, but ran into severe turbulence over southern Myanmar. In less than five seconds, the aircraft plunged more than 50 metres in altitude, with intense shifts in gravitational force. The plane subsequently made an emergency landing in Bangkok for medical assistance. Singapore Airlines said a total of 79 people on board were injured. Charlotte Lim reports.
