Russian Davos: No mountains, no snow, no important guests | News In Depth

Smoke billowed over St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin’s home city, as Ukrainian drones struck several important targets on the very day of the International Economic Forum.

“It’s a good lesson for the collaborators of Mr. Putin who decided to attend his assembly in Saint Petersburg, which is considered a Russian Davos. Well, good luck: no mountains, no snow, and no heads of state,” Michał Broniatowski, TVP World’s Editor-in-Chief, said, commenting on the shortage of prominent foreign state officials at the event. “If you’re looking for some important players, any important players of global politics, there is nobody there.”

The U.S. had sent a low-level cabinet official to the event, which Broniatowski said constituted a slight directed at Putin in itself, but added that even this is too much. But it should not come as too much of a surprise, considering the decision to lift the sanctions on Russian oil.

“The Americans are actively supporting the Russian war effort in Ukraine because lifting sanctions on oil, even if under the pretext of the Strait of Hormuz blockade (...) is clear support for Russia, and if they wanted to do something about it, they should have (...) imposed sanctions again and not talk about it,” Broniatowski said.

In general, the forum has proven an embarrassment for Vladimir Putin, especially considering the coverage was hijacked by the drone strikes.

“All the main news outlets of the world see the skies over Saint Petersburg are clouded (as a) result of Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets. And (the drones) were flying absolutely undisturbed,” TVP World’s Editor-in-Chief said.
