Ukraine’s 3,000,000 children begin another wartime school year | Ukraine Brief

As Ukraine marks the start of a new school year on September 1, children are returning to classrooms under the shadow of intensifying Russian attacks.

At least 20 people have been killed and more than 60 wounded across Ukraine in the latest strikes, while in Kyiv, children began the school year in shelters or learning remotely as air-raid alerts continued.

UN data shows that child casualties rose sharply in July, with more than 3,900 child casualties recorded since the full-scale invasion began.

Ukraine Brief’s host Benjamin Lee is joined by Dmytro Sharaievskyi, Education Specialist at UNICEF, to look at how years of war, displacement and disrupted education are shaping a generation of Ukrainian children, many of whom have never known school in peacetime.
