Thirty-five years after declaring independence from the Soviet Union, Moldova is looking increasingly westward, with Ukraine remaining one of its closest partners and both countries pursuing a shared path toward the European Union.
Their ties have deepened across security, energy, transport, and infrastructure, becoming even more important as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to reshape the region. Presidents Maia Sandu and Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Kyiv and Chișinău just days apart to mark their respective countries’ independence days. With their security and European ambitions increasingly intertwined, cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine could have consequences well beyond their shared border. But what could closer integration with Europe mean for the two neighbours and for the wider region?
