LGE 2026 | ANC-SACP tensions ahead of 2026 Local Government Elections: Thembisa Faukude weighs in

For decades, the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have campaigned together as members of the Tripartite Alliance, alongside COSATU.

But that political arrangement is facing perhaps its biggest test yet.

The SACP is preparing to contest the November 4 local government elections independently, under its own name, rather than campaign alongside the ANC.

The ANC has warned that this could fragment its traditional support base, while the SACP says it needs its own political voice to advance working-class interests.

And the tensions are now spilling into COSATU, with some affiliates backing the ANC and others supporting the SACP. COSATU is expected to debate its position at its national congress next month.

So, is this simply a tactical electoral break, or are we witnessing a fundamental realignment of South African politics?
