Icelanders have narrowly rejected a proposal to resume talks on joining the European Union. The “no” side prevailed despite arguments that EU membership could help lower inflation and costs of living.
Voters against the proposal stressed sovereignty and control over Iceland’s fishing waters and farming rules. The result is also a setback for Brussels, which had hoped Iceland could become a powerful example of the EU’s appeal.
