Crime Stats | There's nothing to brag about: crime expert

Independent Crime expert, Mxolisi Mathabula, says there's nothing to braga about the recent crime statistics. Mathebula says crime is still high in South Africa.

Presenting the crime stats in Pretoria, South African Police Service Component Head and Crime Registrar, Major General, Thulare Sekhukhune, says there were 343 fewer murders in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, with seven of the nine provinces recording declines.

Mpumalanga and North West recorded increases in murder.

Sekhukhune highlighted national increases in violent contact crimes such as attempted murder, common assault, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
