‘Sediment bomb’: Expert points to phenomenon behind Nepal disaster

Deadly floods and landslides triggered by a glacier collapse have struck Nepal and China, burying villages, washing away roads and hampering rescue efforts. Speaking to CAN’s Asia Now, Basanta Raj Adhikari, director of the Centre for Disaster Studies at Nepal’s Tribhuvan University, says a phenomenon his research team calls a “sediment bomb” may have played a role in the disaster. It occurs when sediment accumulated in the high mountains is unleashed by intense rainfall and snowmelt, creating potentially devastating flows.
