One of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Yayoi Kusama, has died at the age of 97. Inspired by hallucinations she experienced since childhood, Kusama became known worldwide for her distinctive polka dots, vivid colors and abstract forms.

After decades of working largely outside the spotlight, she gained international recognition in the late 1980s and went on to become one of the world’s best-selling contemporary artists. Her iconic pumpkins, immersive installations and signature polka dots leave behind a legacy that is set to endure for generations.
