Australia to double fines over under-16 social media ban

Australia said it will double the maximum penalty for social media companies that systematically fail to enforce its ban on accounts for children under 16. Under the proposed changes announced on June 27, the maximum fine would rise from 49.5 million Australian dollars to 99 million Australian dollars – about $68 million. The government also plans to strengthen the information-gathering powers of the eSafety Commissioner, allowing the regulator to require platforms to provide evidence of steps taken to stop under-16s from opening accounts. Authorities said possible non-compliance by Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok is under investigation.
