Remembering the June 16 Soweto uprising

The African continent will on Tuesday observe the Day of the African Child, whille South Africa commemorates the 50th anniversary of the June 1976 student's uprising. The historic event began as a peaceful protest by learners against the introduction of Afrikaans as medium of instruction in schools. It was met with police violence and resulted in the death of many children. Fifty years on, some of those who were there wrote a book on Soweto, the township where it all began. SABC Correspondent Sophie Mokoena spoke to those who were there, and those who were not.
