Social Media Case | META agrees to $16.68bn settlement

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is settling one of the most consequential legal challenges yet to the way social media platforms are designed for children and teenagers.

The company has agreed to a settlement worth up to 16.68 billion dollars with 29 US states, as a federal trial in Oakland, California, was underway.

The states accused Meta of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram to keep young people engaged and of failing to adequately protect them from potential harms linked to social media use.
