The safety of learners in South African schools. In Alexandra, learners at Minerva Secondary School protested following allegations of inappropriate sexual communication and conduct involving a teacher and a Grade 12 learner. This is not an isolated concern. Earlier this year, an educator at Ivory Park Secondary School was arrested following allegations that he raped a learner. in 2024, a Creative Arts teacher from Tembisa was sentenced to five life terms after being convicted of repeatedly sexual assualting a Grade 7 learner in 2019.
So the question we are asking today is simple, but deeply important: Are our schools truly safe spaces for our children?
