SA mourns passing of Maria Sophia Coertse

South Africa is mourning the passing of global icon and renowned opera legend, Maria Sophia Coertse.

Affectionately known as Mimi, Coertse died at her home in Waterkloof, Pretoria, yesterday, aged 93.

Coertse was the first South African to conquer the opera stages of Europe in the 1950s, paving the way for generations of local singers.
