U.S. commitment to NATO is reliable, but signalling is confusing | Philip Bednarczyk

U.S. fighter jets played a prominent role in NATO maneuvers, during which they circled Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad,wedged between Poland and Lithuania. It is a reassuring signal of Washington’s commitment to its NATO allies. But how reliable is that commitment?

“The commitment is reliable. The signals are confusing at best,” Philip Bednarczyk, Director of the Warsaw Office of the German Marshall Fund, told TVP World, citing U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated demands regarding the Danish Arctic territory of Greenland and Washington’s withdrawal of troops and assorted military capabilities from Europe as examples. “If you want to paint it nicely and philosophically, maybe the U.S. is pivoting somewhere else.”

“But if that happens quickly or is misunderstood in NATO capitals, that certainly can be a risk of misunderstanding in Moscow,"" Bednarczyk said. “And I do think it’s a vulnerability, right?”
