Government challenges ruling on ‘exclusionary’ SRD grant rules at the SCA - 25 August 2026

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein hears the appeal against the North Gauteng High Court judgment on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant on Tuesday.

The High Court found in January 2025 that key aspects of the grant system were unlawfully designed in ways that excluded millions of otherwise eligible applicants.

The appeal centres on whether the government's design and administration of the SRD grant unlawfully excludes eligible people.
