Drier season looms for SA farmers

South African farmers say they are preparing for expected El Niño conditions, which could bring below-normal rainfall, and increase drought and veld-fire risks.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says El Niño is likely to bring drier conditions and fewer days of rainfall, with higher temperatures increasing the risk of veld fires, particularly across parts of the central and eastern interior.

AgriSA says improved technology and early-warning information are helping farmers to adapt and prepare for the potentially difficult season.
