National Freedom Party under pressure ahead of November elections

The National Freedom Party (NFP) is warning that the loss of about 200 members to the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) could weaken its campaign ahead of the November Local Government Elections.

NFP provincial chairperson Mbali Shinga says the defections come at a difficult time for the party, which is already battling internal leadership divisions.

The IFP welcomed back former NFP members, including senior party figures, at a gathering over the weekend. Addressing the media in Durban, Shinga conceded that the NFP is facing a crisis.
