AGSA calls for stricter municipal oversight

Tighter controls with enhanced oversight of projects, better accountability and consequence management are needed for municipalities to function effectively.

That's the view of the Auditor General's office.

It gave feedback on four of the country's metros during a briefing of Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

Mangaung, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and eThekwini's financial statements were laid bare before MPs.

In many cases, key AG findings pointto a lack of monitoring, slow-moving projects, poor budgeting, and a general lack of accountability.
