Concerns over alleged misconduct in the SAPS

Alleged involvement of members of the South African Police Service in wrong doing has raised concerns around the rule of law and accountability in law enforcement.

About twenty police officers, among them the country's most senior cop Fanie Masemola have so far appeared before the Madlanga Commission, which is probing criminality political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

This week, the national commissioner appeared in court alongside alleged underworld figure Cat Matlala and his co-accused.

Gauteng Hawks head Ebrahim Kadwa and Major-General Firoz Khan were granted bail on charges linked to the Precious Metals Act and defeating the ends of justice.

National organised crime unit member Fanie Nkosi is currently in custody after being denied bail when incriminating evidence was found during a raid at his Pretoria North home.

Meanwhile, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi is out on bail after he was arrested on charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.

Also, crime intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo is currently facing charges related to the unlawful appointment of an unqualified officer to a senior position.
