Tensions between the United States and Brazil have reached their worst point in decades. Washington has rolled out new tariffs on Brazilian imports, revoked the visa of the Brazilian ambassador to the US, and is reportedly considering further measures targeting Brazil’s judiciary. As Brazil prepares for its October presidential election, President Lula is accusing Washington of trying to interfere in the vote. At the same time, the Trump administration is openly reviving the Monroe Doctrine and calling for renewed US preeminence in the Western Hemisphere. Are these tensions simply a series of bilateral disputes, or part of a broader US push to reassert dominance in the region?
